Reaction to terrorism

I've gotten better at being aware of my internal response to terrorism. Usually it starts with fury and rage, and then I also move into anxiety, grief, and sadness. And shock. Like, What kind of people would attack hospitals?

Yehoshua and I are talking about how we want to respond. Tzedaka is a traditional Jewish response that we are considering, either to help rebuild the Chabad House or to support other Chabad educational endeavors. Over the past year, I've been in touch with a woman who runs Jewish services for a small city in the Ukraine, including the shul, the school, etc. She and her husband show characteristic Chabad selflessness, dedication, and energy. (www.chabadcrimea.org)

May H' bring recovery of body and soul to all those who have suffered in this terrorism, comfort to those who have lost loved ones, and justice to the perpetrators.

Love,
Rachel

Yum

The bad news, of course, is what's going on in Mumbai...we are all dovening that the innocent be spared any continued suffering and that the terrorists get what they deserve. In much better news at home, Yehoshua made sourdough English muffins, which were delicious. They join his repertoire of sourdough bread, foccaccia, pancakes, and my favorite, bread with olives and Parmesan cheese. We've been eating well around here.

Flah news! Elections today for mayor!!

By Adina.
If you came to Beit-Shemesh, there will be a lot of news going around. While voters vote, kids do everything else.
What? While cars with speakers singing silly song about the candidates. Kids start singing with them, between them, Ferri Hershberg herself sang. Here is a small interview: Adina: do you like singing? Ferri: "ya!! Very much!". Do you like Shalom Lerner (the candidate Mommy and Abba are voting)? "Yes! I do like Shlalom Lernerrrr! I know his whole song by heart."
What else do kids do? Put on T-Shirts that have candidates names and and Chatter-box in school how he is so good. Who is between the Chatter-boxers? Adina Hershberg the writer of this article. Here is a small interview: Adina: About who do you blabber about? Adina: "Shalom Lerner, of course!!". Who do you try to convince? "Since almost all the girls in class like Lerner, so I don't blabber as much to them. The person I do ,believe it or not: My bus driver. All my friends and I try to explain to him how good he is".
What else? Good deeds of course! The one and only Yosef Hershberg went for 2 hours to pick up mean fliers (about Shalom Lerner, saying stuff like he has no experience and he is no good, which is not true) and everyone was saying "good job" and stuff like that. Even a reporter took a picture of him (a real one), so we are expecting him on the front page of 'Haaretz' or 'Jarusalem post.
I would tell you more but I have homework... Wait a sec, am I setting a bad example for Ferri? Of course not! She can't even read yet.
Love,
Adina Chava Hershberg the one and only reporter.

Feri and Sara sleeping on the floor

A few shots from my vacation in the desert last week

All the news that's fit to print

I have finished The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and I can tell it was a masterpiece because I don't know what to make of it - this means there was enough content and challenge that it will take time to digest, and probably a reread as well. I still prefer Yiddish Policeman's Union, mostly because I loved the premise, and all the characters.

Our Amazing Adventures:
Adina got 110 on her Torah test - YOU GO GIRL. This is especially significant because it was a hard test, and many girls in the class didn't do so well.
Ferri just made a Cheerios and bead necklace.
Yoshe Ber knows the first chapter of Leviticus by heart. I know for some of you folks out there Temple sacrifices may seem not the greatest educational priority, but we are extremely proud of him.
Ferri has just learned the blessing for after going to the bathroom, and recites it with enthusiasm.
Sara B is lifting herself up, not yet onto her knees, and rocking. For the last three nights, she has slept until four or five before being nursed!!!!!!!
Yoshe Ber got his Tae Kwon Do uniform and wears it with pride.
Y and I finally went to the nursery last week, and have planted basil, coriander, radishes (inspired by my Dad), "baby greens," and mint. Garlic please G-d to come soon.

We have been exploring Do-it-Yourself. Frozen ice coffee, bread, muffins, biscuits have gone very well. Checked into raising chickens for eggs, doesn't work. Can't find the right coagulant for making tofu. Bought a second-hand ice cream maker, and fritzed it on the Israeli electricity, it may or may not be able to be fixed. Want to try mozzarella (also inspired by Barbara Kingsolver) and yogurt. Any ideas for us? In other great kitchen news, we bought a new Semiens oven which arrived today!

Hitting news! Ferri is learning to jump-rope

By Miss Adina C. Hershberg otherwise known as yours truly.
Do you know how old is Ferri? Of course you know!!! I have come to the conclusion that she is old enough to learn to jump-rope. She was very excited when I told her and I taught her how to do 1 big jump then 1 small jump over and over again. Then this morning, I took a Jump-rope and I starting rolling it over ferri's and my heads in till she jumped over it. When she did her first jump - excitement was in the air, Yours truly started telling ferri how good she was. Both parents came rushing from the kitchen. Everyone was ecstatic! We did it again (Ferri and yours truly) and this time our folks saw it! I am sorry that there is no picture, but it happened so fast Abba did not get a chance to go get the camera...
Good Shabbat!
Miss A.C. Hershberg otherwise know as yours truly.

Latest activity

Adina and Yoshe Ber have a new jewelry business. They both design, he makes, and she sells and does bookkeeping.
(this is me now - Adina, Mommy was beforehand) You must be thinking: "What in the world is the Tzvi's Jewelry, because it's not at all Yosha Ber's name!" So the answer is: You know that Hershberg in Yddish is Hill of Tzvi, and Tzvi which means Deer. So in english it Deer's Jewelry! What crazy name!!!!!!!!!!!
